Annual; stems procumbent to ascending, 10–50 cm, ± canescent
Leaves: Leaves 1.5-4cm, ovate, cordate, crenate to 3-lobed, densely puberulent to strigose.
Inflorescence: umbels of 1-3 flowers, sepals 5–10 mm, with a mucro, tip strigose; petals unequal, 7–12 mm, lavender to purple, usually darker towards the base; stamen filaments whitish-green; anthers purple-pink; pollen orange-yellow; stigmas purple-pink. Flowers March to May
Fruit: fruit 4-7.8 cm; style column 3–7 cm; mericarp 5-8mm; foveole transversely elliptic, deep, or with a high ridge, glabrous, furrow 0; stiff glassy light brown hairs with dark brown raised tubercle; mericarp pointed, point very short and bristly hairy; carpel case covered in ridges and ribs making pits rather hexagonal in shape; hairs on awn white, awn is not feathery; geranium type pollen . 2n=20
Distribution: endemic to N.America – Mexico, USA; California, Nevada, Utah, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, deserts, and dry sandy places.
