Erodium brachycarpum (Godr.)Thell.


Annual herb, stems hairy, glandular, 10-40cm from seedling rosette.


Leaves oblong or long-oblong, rather hard shiny, few haired to glabrous, shallowly lobed, upper leaves pinnatisect.


Inflorescence: first umbel stemless from seedling rosette, then branches develop and umbels are axillary; flowers 15-22mm across, dull purple, petals with dark central nerve, broader on upper two petals; sepals are not at all red tipped. Mericarp 7-8mm, not more; only 1 furrow below foveole which is pilose; beak 65-90mm, not more; beak is red at base and green at tip; cotyledons have only one incision. 2n=40


Distribution: origin N. Africa; now Spain, Canaries, Morocco, Algeria; found on schists, sandstones and barren soils; it has spread in wool to Chile, Australia, RSA, USA (Oregon), reimported into Belgium, Britain.
